I was thinking this is more like the Kevin McReynolds acquisition, but then again, I've suffered as a Mets fan for a bit longer. Either way, it sure has the feel of another albatross around the team's neck, especially in the latter 3 years of the contract.
Vaughn was 35, in horrendous shape, had missed the previous year, and wasn't nearly as good as Bay was offensively the 2 years before he joined the Mets.
Vaughn was acquired by the Mets via trade with Kevin Appier going to the Angels. Appier was due over $30 million dollars over the next 3 years, and he didn't finish that contract. The Mets were on the hook for $42 million for Vaughn. Appier was released in 2003 while still owed over $12 million. In other words, it turned out to be a swap of dreadful contracts. The Mets got the bad end of the ugly stick, but it wasn't that much worse than the sunk cost that Appier was going to be. Bay really is a different situation. If the point is that both situations are going to end badly, then sure, I can see that. You might as well throw up a photo of Oliver Perez. That said, I love your writing, and appreciate that you were trying to be pithy and amusing.
I don't mean this too literally. Bay is a good player and he'll help the Mets this year. But it's not a good deal. I laid out some substantive objections here: http://www.tmarchman.com/ic/2009/12/10/not-thrilling.html

Sigh.

So how is this comparable at all?
